Nature Communications publishes paper on autonomous perching of ornithopter robots from GRIFFIN ERC Advanced Grant

27/12/2022

The prestigious journal Nature Communications has published the paper “How ornithopters can perch autonomously on a branch” (https://lnkd.in/d87ueYUP).
This is a result of the GRIFFIN Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (https://lnkd.in/gmiKa39h ) of Anibal Ollero, that has developed the first flapping and gliding bioinspired robotic birds, with fully autonomous capabilities of flying and perching.
The paper describes the flapping wing robot and the leg-claw system for the autonomous perching on a branch.
This work paves the way towards the application of flapping-wing robots for long range observation and logistic missions, also including manipulation after perching.

Aníbal Ollero, plenary speaker at Robot 2022, presents research on aerial robotics

27/12/2022

Last November 23 Aníbal Ollero delivered a plenary presentation entitled «Aerial Manipulators and Bioinspired Robots» at the Robot 2022 Fifth Iberian Robotics Conference. The presentation showcased recent research from the H2020 AERIAL-CORE project, which Ollero is coording, on aerial manipulation techniques, including manipulation while flying and perching.

Ollero also presented results from his ERC Advanced Grant GRIFFIN, including more efficient prototypes of bioinspired flapping-wing aerial robots that are capable of fully autonomous indoor and outdoor flight, with on-board perception for guidance and obstacle detection and avoidance. Finally, Ollero provided a glimpse into the future, presenting preliminary results on manipulation with flapping-wing robots.

GRVC members were invited to participate in several panels in UNVEX 2022

19/09/2022

UNVEX 2022, the main drones national event in Spain, was held in the FIBES exhibition centre in Seville from 14 to 16 September of 2022. Several GRVC members were invited to participate in different UNVEX panels.

Aníbal Ollero (https://grvc.us.es/head-of-the-laboratory/), director of the GRVC Robotics Lab, was invited to one of the main plenary panels of UNVEX: the «Technological challenges» panel 11 moderated by Antonio Sousa. Aníbal presented the main achievements of two initiatives he is leading and coordinating: the AERIAL-CORE EU Project (https://aerial-core.eu/) and the GRIFFIN ERC Advanced Grant (https://griffin-erc-advanced-grant.eu/).

Guillermo Heredia moderated the panel 19 («Training») and participated with a presentation about PhD, Master and Undergraduate Students in UAS at the University of Seville.

Finally, Ivan Maza (https://personal.us.es/imaza/) was invited to participate in the panel 17 about Counter-UAS systems. He presented the EU Project COURAGEOUS (https://courageous-isf.eu/) where the GRVC Robotics Lab is participating in the development of a standardized test methodology for detection, tracking and identification of nefarious drones’ utilising countermeasure systems to protect the lower airspace.
